Weekly Careers Update #25/2025

From Switzerland to Armenia, this week’s career moves show how clubs across Europe are reshaping leadership teams and strengthening key business areas — both on and off the pitch.

Jan Wappler joins FC Schaffhausen
Jan Wappler has taken on the role of Chief Commercial Officer at FC Schaffhausen. The Swiss-Australian executive recently spent two years as Director of Corporate Affairs at RC Deportivo La Coruña, where he was responsible for visual identity, branding, marketing, communications, partnerships and CSR, contributing to the club’s promotion to LALIGA Hypermotion. Wappler previously worked for FIFA, UD Ibiza and VfL Wolfsburg. At FC Schaffhausen, he will oversee key commercial and CSR activities as part of the senior management team.

Mike Bohndiek leaves Arsenal FC and steps away from Cortex
Mike Bohndiek has officially left Arsenal FC after completing his second term at the club, where he led major digital transformation projects across football performance, fan experience and business operations. Although previously announced as incoming Managing Director at Cortex, Bohndiek has now decided to step away from that role for personal reasons. He will take a short break before pursuing new opportunities.

Andreas Luthe and Hans-Peter Villis elected at VfL Bochum
Andreas Luthe has been elected Chairman of the Executive Board at VfL Bochum 1848, while Hans-Peter Villis and Till Grönemeyer will serve as Deputy Chairmen. Additionally, Villis has been appointed Chairman of the club’s newly elected Supervisory Board, with Luthe as Deputy. The appointments follow the club’s extraordinary general assembly held earlier this month.

Alexey Balyberdin and Tigran Mkrtchyan appointed at Alashkert
FC Alashkert has named Alexey Balyberdin as General Director and Tigran Mkrtchyan as Vice President. Balyberdin brings over a decade of experience in European and Russian football, most recently with Bulgarian side Botev, and will focus on the club’s strategic development. Mkrtchyan, a football agent and scout, has worked extensively in Armenia, Russia and Africa, and is the founder of the Vista football project in Russia. Their appointments follow structural changes at the club under new co-ownership.
