FC Famalicão Launches New App to Strengthen Fan Connection

When FC Famalicão launched its official mobile app on 4 August 2025, the goal wasn’t flashy innovation. It was connection. Built in partnership with Blocksport, the app is designed to give fans more direct access to their club, and to lay a foundation for future growth.

“It’s about improving communication with fans,” say Miguel Ribeiro, President of FC Famalicão SAD. “We have a small stadium and a loyal fan base. The app helps us bridge that gap digitally.”

Unlike Portugal’s top three, few Primeira Liga clubs have an official mobile app. With this launch, FC Famalicão moves closer to the league’s tech leaders, not by size, but by ambition.

A Digital Project From the Ground Up

Club officials, who took over operational leadership in late 2023, led the app development from the start. Partnering with Blocksport offered a fast, scalable path.

“We didn’t see the value in building something internally,” Miguel explains. “Blocksport gave us a strong template, solid back office, and a team that listens. They adapted to our ideas and helped bring them to life.”

“I saw in Blocksport an excellent template and a great back office for a club of our size,” he adds.

The development process began in January 2025. Within seven months, the club went from initial discussions to public launch, with a test environment already running weeks in advance.

Designed for Engagement, Built for Growth

The app opens with a simple mission: build a more direct, more interactive line between FC Famalicão and its fans.

Key features at launch include:

  • Push notifications for news, updates, and match alerts
  • Ticketing and future plans for in-app payments
  • Fan polls and voting, including Player of the Match
  • Content access like player stats and team insights
  • eCommerce integration for the club’s online store

One of the standout ideas in development is a Panini-style player sticker feature, set to launch later this year. A chat function and OTT integration (focused on streaming youth matches) are also on the roadmap.

“This is just the beginning,” club officials say. “We want the app to evolve alongside the club. Especially as we work towards a new stadium and better fan infrastructure.”

A Platform, Not Just an App

FC Famalicão’s vision stretches beyond ticketing or push alerts. Club officials see the app as a central piece in a wider transformation: improving fan interaction, growing local partnerships, and building brand recognition.

“We want to control the communication between the club and the fans,” they explains, “and also promote cross-selling with local businesses.”

The strategy includes:

  • Local business integration, enabling discounts at restaurants and shops for app users
  • Community-driven campaigns, like Fan of the Match
  • Future cashless payments and smart stadium features tied to new infrastructure

“We don’t expect a miracle in revenue this season,” they say. “The main value right now is brand-building and communication. But if the app pays for itself, that’s already a win.”

Young Fans First — But Not Only

While the app is designed to appeal to younger users, the club doesn’t see age as a strict barrier. “A 15-year-old will use it more than someone who’s 65, sure,” say officials. “But what matters is giving everyone something useful.”

In a market where only six clubs have their own app (mostly the Big Three – Sporting, Benfica, FC Porto) FC Famalicão’s move stands out. It puts the club in a more advanced digital category, without trying to run before walking.

A Message to Other Clubs: Start Smart

The club has a clear message for others considering a similar move:

“Don’t try to build something perfect from day one. Start with the basics. Find a good partner. Focus on real connection with fans.”

So far, the results point in the right direction. Quick development, clear communication, and a flexible partner in Blocksport have given FC Famalicão a strong base to build from.

And for a club looking to grow its presence, both online and off, that’s exactly the kind of foundation it needs.
